A Profile of Clarke Group
A Profile of Clarke Group
The Clarke Family first came to Uganda in 1987. Dr Ian Clarke worked as a medical doctor working for a missionary organization in Luwero, and built a mission hospital – Kiwoko Hospital, which still thrives today. Since then he went on to build International Medical Group (IMG), which consisted of a network of private primary healthcare clinics, the premiere hospital in Kampala, and an HMO medical insurance company. At the same time his Ugandan daughter Rose Nanyonga Clarke started a School of Nursing, with the aim of producing high quality nurses for IMG. This became a licensed University in 2008 – International health Sciences University.
A Profile of Clarke Group
His son Sean Clarke came back to work in Uganda in 2010, managing and growing the clinic network, and then working as COO for IMG. In 2015 a majority shareholding of IMG was sold to a Mauritian investment fund, and the proceeds used to fund a number of new Clarke Group ventures. This included a 1,500 acre farm, and a private nursery and primary school – Clarke Junior School. Clarke Group has a vision to provide nursery to work education with a different “skills and character” approach for positive social impact, with the goal of developing lifelong learners.
Having finished her PhD at Yale, Dr Rose Nanyonga Clarke returned to Uganda as Vice Chancellor of the university, which recently changed its name to reflect a diversification from health sciences, to Clarke International University. Sean Clarke acts as CEO of Clarke Group Education, encompassing the university, nursery and primary schools, soon to become a school network.
The Clarke family also owns and operates a number of residential properties, including an apartment block, as well as a boutique hotel in Zanzibar, built and managed by Dr Clarke’s other son Michael Clarke.
